The Patriarchal Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ of the UGCC in Kyiv consecrated a special Vyshhorod Icon of the Mother of God, created for blind people. The consecration was performed by the Primate of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, His Beatitude Sviatoslav, during the Divine Liturgy.
This icon was made by the creative and scientific team of the Department of Design and Art Theory of the Educational and Research Institute of Arts of the Vasyl Stefanyk Carpathian National University in cooperation with the Ivano-Frankivsk Museum of Local Lore. The icon is part of the inclusive project “Seeing Treasures Together” aimed at making art accessible to blind people.
The icon is made using a special tactile technique: its three-dimensional texture can be explored by touch, feeling the contours of figures, clothes, the face of the Virgin Mary and Jesus. This allows visually impaired people to “read” the image with their hands.
