The translations of John Steinbeck’s novel “East of Eden” and Kurt Vonnegut’s novel “Slapstick or Lonesome No More!” were presented at the Faculty of Foreign languages. The translator, professor Tetyana Nekryach, and the head of the publishing house “Vavylonska biblioteka” Roman Malynovsky were invited to the meeting, moderated by the head of the Department of the English language professor Yakiv Bystrov.
At the meeting prof. Tetyana Nekryach shared her experience in translating fiction with the colleagues and students. She mentioned both the approaches dominating in the Ukrainian translation studies, and her personal work results, namely, the tactics and strategies enabling the translator to fully represent the original. Prof. Tetyana Nekryach provided the illustrations of her latest works which proved to be the true challenges in translation.
In the course of the discussion Roman Malynovsky focused on Tetyana Nekryach’s special creative manner, when the translator gets involved in the text, “lives” its fictional life. He mentioned that Tetyana Nekryach was the first translator to have shown such incredible efficiency and to have done the translation of Vonnegut’s “Slapstick” in 21-day term.
